P-Iris Allows Surveillance Cameras to Reach a New Level of Quality
The advanced iris control is especially beneficial for megapixel / HDTV cameras and demanding video surveillance applications."P-Iris allows surveillance cameras to reach a new level of image quality," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager of Axis Communications Inc. "This is a revolutionary improvement for video surveillance cameras and for the industry in general as we expect P-Iris to become a standard that eventually replaces DC-iris (auto-iris) lenses."DC-iris control for surveillance cameras with fixed / varifocal lenses does not enable the camera or user to know the exact position of the iris opening, which is needed in order to optimize image clarity.
Axis saw a need to solve this and engaged Kowa, an optics manufacturer, to jointly develop a solution."The P-Iris lens uses a stepper motor that allows the position of the iris opening to be precisely controlled," said Tosao Tohjima, technical director at Kowa CCTV Products. "P-Iris is an innovative solution that truly allows a network camera, particularly a megapixel network camera, to perform optimally in all lighting conditions."
About Kowa Company, Ltd. Since its establishment in 1894, Kowa has grown into a multinational Japanese company actively engaged in various manufacturing and trading activities in the fields of pharmaceutical, textiles, opto-electronics and various consumer products. Kowa has been producing high quality CCTV lenses for some 60 years.

Anixter, Axis Communications, CommScope, Firetide, OnSSI, and S2 Security Offer a Powerful Integrated Physical Security Solution
I spent some time a few weeks ago with Anixter, Axis Communications, OnSSI, Commscope, Firetide and S2 Security. The meeting was sponsored by Anixter reviewing a case study from a large pharmaceutical corporation based in the Midwest. The presenters reviewed the scope of work and solutions including:
- Upgrading the Infrastructure
- Extending the Network
- Selecting the Cameras
- Managing the Video
- Integrating Access Control
- And Deployment
The benefits to the end-user were explained as:
- Faster response times and easier implementation of security procedures
- Wider access to multiple sites with stricter access to sensitive areas
- Intuitive, centralized security management system
- Lower total cost of ownership (TCO)
All of the attendees also received a nice 1GB thumb drive with all the information from the presentation and from each of the vendors. Also, the lunch was great!
Because of my national accounts work, I was very familiar with all of the vendors except for S2 Security. S2, headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts demonstrated their 100% browser-based, enterprise security solution network appliance architecture. This solution leverages the power of IP networking technology, open systems and current IT practice delivering the end-user an unprecedented level of control over physical security.
If you would like to discuss this type of solution for your organization, please contact me at your convenience.
